Of interest to everyone, but especially to those who attended the West Coast spring retreat:

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A California agency on Thursday unanimously adopted a broad, long-range plan to manage the ailing Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.

After several hours of public comments and protests by opponents, the Delta Stewardship Council voted 7-0 to approve the final version of the Delta Plan, a blueprint for restoring the delta's ecosystem and improving water supply reliability.

The plan does not call for specific construction projects but contains policies and recommendations....

We wanted to share with your a new way to both fund your research and implementation work. We have joined the SciFund Challenge to try "crowd fundraising" by way of the web. Working with this organization, we designed a proposal, had it reviewed, and then put on the web for a brief period, roughly one month. The proposal is then sent on the web to everyone you know.

Please have a look at our attempt to raise money to continue our field research and advocacy for the sage grouse.

Amy Clipp (2009) gave a webinar for us that offered ideas for bridging the gap between science and policy, with a particular focus on helping scientists apply their work in complex, political environments.

As a starting point, the webinar examined the following questions:

  • What do scientists need to know before they collaborate on high profile policy projects?
  • How can scientists most productively work with diverse stakeholders?
  • How and when should scientists share interim results?

We are soliciting input and participation from Fellows savvy in communications and outreach to organizations involved in the conservation and management of seabirds. Our project seeks to connect the scientific method to conservation actions, and has high potential to have immediate and significant impact for Laysan albatross (LAAL) and black-footed albatross (BFAL).
