About Brian's Work

Brian completed his BS in Forestry at UMaine and his MS in Forestry at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. His professional focus is the conservation of biodiversity in managed forests, particularly through the delineation of key habitat areas and the adaptation of harvesting practices. His work has focused on developing practical field methods and encouraging their use by professional foresters. In the summer of 2008 he worked with Switzer support with a large forest leaseholder in Russian Karelia, assisting company foresters in the identification and protection of key biotopes within harvest zones. In 2009-2010 he completed a Fulbright project in Ukraine about the delineation of "high conservation value forests. From 2010-2015 he worked as forest projects coordinator for the Amur branch of WWF Russia in the Far East, where he worked on delineation of HCVF, especially within intact forest landscapes, and also studied flows of illegal timber from the region through China to western markets. Since 2015 he works for WWF International, where he is helping design policies related to Intact Forest Landscape conservation in Canada, Russia and the Congo Basin. He also works for Mercy Corps, a humanitarian organization, which assists war-affected civilians in eastern Ukraine.
