About Bruce's Work

Bruce is a Professor emeritus of Management and Innovation at Menlo College. 

He currently serves as Chair of the Santa Clara County Sustainability Commission, Board President for Leadership Sunnyvale, and Co-Chair of the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory. 

Previously, he served as Dean of Business and Academic Affairs at Menlo College, as Interim Dean at the Lorry I. Lokey School of Business and Public Policy, at Mills College, Faculty Director of Graduate Programs and Chair of the Management Department for the College of Business at San Francisco State University. He served as Chair of the Fisher International MBA program at Monterey Institute of International Studies. He began his academic career at San Francisco State University, where he helped create an MBA concentration in Sustainable Business. 

Bruce taught courses on sustainable business, social innovation, corporate social responsibility, and business approaches to poverty alleviation. He was chosen as the Teaching Professor of the Year for the College of Business (SF State) in 2005. 

His research focuses on business strategies and public policies for sustainability. His teaching and research draw on extensive decision-making experience in industry, government and higher education. 

In recent years, Bruce has served on the boards of directors for several public benefit corporations including the Silicon Valley Environmental Partnership, Sustainable Silicon Valley, and The Sustainability Academy. He also served as Chair of the Sustainability Commission for the City of Sunnyvale, CA. He currently serves on the editorial board for the journals Business Strategy and Environment, and Academy of Management Learning and Education. His research has been published in Business Strategy and Environment, The Journal of Cleaner Production, Progress in Industrial Ecology, and Energy Policy. 

Bruce earned a BA in Environmental Science from Wesleyan University, an MBA from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
