About Caitlin's Work
Caitlin is the Director of the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area and Coastal Center at Shortridge for Bates College where she engages faculty and students in coastal research. Prior to her time at Bates, she worked for FB Environmental as a consultant focused on the North Atlantic right whale entanglement issue. Cait has close to a decade of experience working with coastal communities and in marine resources. Through her work, she has identified tools to preserve working waterfronts, facilitated community participation in the regional ocean planning process, and designed and implemented cooperative fisheries and aquaculture research. She has a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Colby College, a master’s in Public Administration in environmental science and policy from Columbia University, and dual masters’ degrees in marine biology and marine policy from the University of Maine where she is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in ecology and environmental science focused on the potential for integrating aquaculture and commercial fishing. Caitlin believes that coupling social science with natural science efforts is important in developing effective conservation strategies that adequately account for the human aspect of marine issues. Ultimately, she is interested in researching the delicate balance of managing fisheries in the dynamic natural, social, and political systems in which marine resources are embedded.
