About Chelsi's Work

Chelsi Sparti is an energy professional with 12+ years of experience in North America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Europe. She holds a Master’s of Energy and Resources from UC Berkeley, and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Point Loma Nazarene University. At Brookfield Renewable, Chelsi monitors electricity policy and regulatory trends in the Western United States, and she implements strategies to secure commercial opportunities and manage risks in Western electricity markets.

Her academic research at UC Berkeley examined how communities in Puerto Rico recover livelihoods and electric systems after repeated extreme events. She is interested in the decarbonization potential of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disbursements and how risk from energy system vulnerabilities can be mitigated by policy incentives in renewable technologies. Chelsi published energy research while at the Berkeley National Laboratory.

Prior to graduate school Chelsi served as a Fulbright Scholar to Sarawak, Malaysia with the U.S. Department of State, worked three years in the private sector, and four years at a nonprofit advancing nuclear waste policy. Her environmental leadership was recognized in 2019 with a Women’s History Month Award presented by then-California Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins. Over the years, her efforts have improved technical energy policy at City, County, State, and Federal levels. Chelsi is Wintu, native to Bohem Puyuq, and of English-Italian-French-German descent. Her relationship with nature is key to her ethics.

Chelsi serves on the Education Subcommittee of the Truth & Healing Council convened by California Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Office of Tribal Affairs, and she was a 2021 Clean Energy Leadership Institute (CELI) Fellow. Since 2019 she has served on Congressman Mike Levin's (CA-49) Task Force to advance national nuclear waste innovation and oversight, and was a co-author of the 2020 Task Force report on San Onofre Nuclear.
