About Deborah's Work
Deborah is currently a Distinguished Practitioner in Residence in the College of the Environment at the University of Washington. For 13 years she served as the President and CEO of the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. She is a past President of the Society for Conservation Biology. Prior to her work with the Woodland Park Zoo, she was Vice President and director of the Conservation Science Division of The Nature Conservancy, where she was responsible for all scientific activities of the organization's domestic and international programs. Her first book, In Our Own Hands: A Strategy for Conserving Biodiversity in California (Jensen, Torn and Harte) was published by the University of California Press in 1993. Her research has been in forest ecology and climate change.
