Leadership for South Yuba River Citizen’s League, Year 1
To hire Katrina Schneider as Staff River Scientist, providing leadership for South Yuba River Citizen’s League’s evolving and expanding science programs. As Staff River Scientist, Katrina will use her skills in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, river ecology, education, and California water policy to restore anadramous fisheries (i.e. Chinook and Steelhead salmon) and other riverine functions in the upper Yuba watershed and adjacent rivers. Katrina will be directing SYRCL’s involvement in upcoming FERC re-licensing on the Yuba and Bear Rivers and promoting opportunities for floodplain and hydrological connectivity restoration in the lower Yuba River basin. The two primary objectives of her work are: 1) to promote an innovative FERC re-licensing process that facilitates restoration of fisheries and other riverine functions of targeted Sierra rivers, as well as provides a model to improve FERC re-licensing nationwide; and 2) to promote flood management alternatives that achieve needed protection while preserving existing and potential future salmon and steelhead habitat values as well as broader ecological benefits offered by the river.
