About Jeff's Work
Jeff is Director of Conservation Science at Mass Audubon, overseeing sanctuary-based research, habitat management, and bird conservation programs. Jeff's primary interests lie in applying the principles of landscape ecology to wildlife conservation, habitat management, and land protection decisions. Jeff's team has recently produced a breeding bird atlas of Massachusetts and three State of the Birds reports identifying top conservation needs. These recommendations have grown into programs focused on conservation of birds of grasslands and young forests. Research and habitat management on Mass Audubon's 35,000-acre sanctuary system includes dam removals, grassland restoration, invasives control, pollinator habitat, climate change adaptation, and forestry to create openings and to mimic old-growth conditions. Jeff co-authors the influential periodic report, Losing Ground, which tracks the rates of development and land protection in Massachusetts. He also developed MAPPR (www.massaudubon.org/mappr), an online decision-support tool for land protection practitioners.
