About Joe's Work

Joseph Rand is a Scientific Engineering Associate in the Electricity Markets and Policy Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), where he contributes to research on renewable energy public acceptance, markets, and policy. He is the primary database manager for the US Wind Turbine Database, and is a member of the International Energy Agency's Working Group on social acceptance of wind energy (Task 28). He earned a MS from the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) at UC-Berkeley in 2016. His master's research focused on environmental, economic, and social trade-offs in the relicensing of a large hydropower project in California. Before graduate school, Joseph was the Director of Training and Outreach at the KidWind Project, an organization committed to improving K-12 renewable energy STEM education. He was awarded the 'Novus Ventus' award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind and Water Program at the 2015 WindExchange Summit, as well as a Research Award from the Hydro Research Foundation. He earned a B.A. with honors from Macalester College.
