About Judith's Work
As Stewardship Director for Northwest Watershed Institute (NWI), Jude focuses her work on the Tarboo Creek Watershed Restoration Program, an effort to restore and protect native salmon and wildlife habitat to a 7,000 acre rural watershed on the Olympic Peninsula, WA. Restoration activities are based on historic conditions, and are conducted within a context of a 'whole watershed' approach. Since 2004, NWI has planted over 100,000 native trees, replanting over 300 acres of native floodplain forest. In 2007, NWI led an effort to expand the Department of Natural Resource Tarboo-Dabob Natural Area Preserve status to ensure protection of the uplands around Tarboo Bay, which contains rare plant communities and supports some of the most productive oyster beds in Hood Canal. The efforts expanded protection ten-fold. A graduate of Brown University ('88 Environmental Policy) and the University of Vermon Field Naturalist Program ('95 Ecological Restoration), Jude was the recipient of the RK Mellon Fellowship and several regional conservation awards. Jude is based on the Olympic Peninsula, WA.
