About Kari's Work

Kari lives in Anchorage, Alaska, where her husband, Michael Bruce, works at the Centers for Disease Control. She is the Program Coordinator for Alaska Common Ground which is a non-profit committed to informing Alaskans about important public policy issues including climate change. Before moving to Alaska in 2000, Kari was the Director of Program at Interrain Pacific, a non-profit organization in Portland, Oregon, whose mission is to provide public access to geographic information systems. Kari's responsibilities included developing a starter kit training program for conservationists interested in using GIS, training staff at environmental organizations, and managing the budget and books at Interrain Pacific. Prior to moving to Portland, Kari had worked at the Conservation Law Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts, through a Switzer Leadership grant. Her graduate work at UC Berkeley emphasized water resource policy with a thesis examining the implementation of stream restoration.
