About Randy's Work

With degrees in Biology (marine) and Zoology from Humboldt State University, Randy went on to serve in the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Program, assisting fishery and watershed restoration non-profits in rural northern California. Afterwards, he was a Fish Biologist for six years at the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Arcata, CA monitoring water quality on the Klamath River. While working as a biologist, Randy was elected to serve on the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District board of directors, where as Vice President, he promoted sustainable management and learned the ropes of local government. During this time, he was appointed to the board of the Redwood Coast Energy Authority which supports energy efficiency and local renewable energy projects. Randy earned his Master’s degree at UC Santa Barbara’s Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, leading a group project examining the energy/water nexus. This project focused on how to better integrate water use efficiency within commercial business energy audits in order to achieve greater resource productivity and meet societal goals for energy and water conservation. He currently works for the San Francisco Estuary Institute as the Klamath Basin Monitoring Program Coordinator. Here he helps a diverse group of stakeholders coordinate water quality monitoring, share data, and ensure water quality data can inform TMDL's, dam removal, and ecosystem restoration efforts in the Klamath Basin. Additionally, he helps lead an effort to assess cyanobacteria density in large lakes across California using satellite imagery using data visualization tool at https://cchab.sfei.org/.
