About Sarah's Work
Dr. Sarah Hameed joined Marine Conservation Institute as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2016 to launch the Global Ocean Refuge System – an initiative that connects the world’s best marine protected areas and the people who champion them into a strategic network to safeguard marine biodiversity. She continues to lead this growing initiative that is setting science-based standards for marine protected areas, includes 10 awarded Global Ocean Refuges, and now collaborates with 3 new protected area campaigns to ensure they have the best change to fulfill their conservation promise. She has focused her research and conservation career on marine protected areas for over a decade. Her dissertation research, motivated by information gaps exposed in California’s process to design a network of marine protected areas, provided new insights into marine population connectivity along an open coast. Sarah served on the Advisory Council for Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary and now serves as President of the Board of Directors for Cordell Marine Science Foundation. Having grown up exploring the tide pools and coral reefs of Maui, Sarah can now be found surfing the colder waves of Northern California and building sand castles with her family in her free time.
