Sarah Hsu

Sarah Hsu is a primary care resident at the UCSF Internal Medicine Residency based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General. Prior to residency, she was a medical student at Brown University and a Master's student in Primary Care-Population Medicine. At Brown, she co-founded Alpert Medical School's Environmental Coalition and designed the first medical school elective on "Climate Change and Health" in 2019. Seeing the need for a coordinated national effort of medical students advocating for climate and health justice, she became a founding leader and the current Executive Vice Chair of Medical Students for a Sustainable Future, a national network of over 420 medical students across 100+ medical schools. She is also the co-host of a new podcast "Code Green: The Climate Smart Health Professional", which provides an easily accessible medium for health professionals to learn about the health risks and disparities exacerbated by environmental racism and climate change. Outside of the medical field, she volunteers her time with local environmental justice organizations, including Sunrise Providence and Renew RI.

Sarah received her B.A. in Sociology from Brown in 2017. Her research is focused on healthcare sustainability, and as part of her master's thesis, she conducted and published the first ever waste audit of a U.S. Emergency Department. Passionate about the role of health professionals in climate advocacy, she has testified in support of several environmental bills at the Rhode Island State House and has spoken nationally about climate and health at the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Student National Medical Association. Her writing has been featured in World War Zero, Doximity, In-Training, and KevinMD. She was awarded the Stephanie Davis Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention Award at CleanMed in 2019.
