About Thomas's Work

Thomas Kelly is Assistant Professor of Economics, and is a cooperating member of the Latin American Studies Program and the Environmental Studies Program at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. Professor Kelly received his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of California, Riverside. Before coming to Middlebury College, Professor Kelly was on the faculty of the Program for Management and Conservation of Tropical Natural Resources of the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan in Merida, Mexico. His areas of research are economic development, poverty and inequality, and environmental problems and food security in developing countries. He is the author of studies examining the relationship between poverty and environmental problems in developing countries, the economic causes of tropical deforestation, and alternative strategies for sustainable agricultural development in Mexico. His most recent research work has focused on the effect of changes in rural labor markets on on-farm biodiversity in the Yucatan.
