David Austin

David received his BA in mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 1984, followed by a tour as a Naval officer in marine salvage and diving. After his ship successfully rescued a grounded Exxon supertanker in 1989, he became keenly interested in an environmental career. He received an MS in Water Resources Management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993 and an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UC-Davis in 1996. He was the Operations Manager of Living Technologies, Inc. in Burlington, Vermont from 1996 to 2000; Director of Research and Development for Living Machines, Inc. in Taos, New Mexico from 2000 to 2005, where he authored six US Patents for wastewater treatment. He was Vice-President of Ecological Design for North American Wetland Engineering, LLC in White Bear Lake, Minnesota (2005-2007). He currently is a Principal Technologist in Natural Treatment Systems for CH2M Hill. David is a Certified Senior Ecologist (Ecological Society of America) and a Registered Professional Engineer in three states. He specializes in advanced wastewater treatment, design of engineered wetlands for industrial and domestic wastewater treatment, lake restoration, wetland design for water quality improvements, wastewater reuse, and decentralized wastewater treatment. He is currently involved in multiple lake/reservoir water quality improvement projects. He also is engaged in mine reclamation projects in Canada.
