About Hugh's Work
Hugh has 15 years of experience and expertise in the social and environmental justice movement both here and abroad. Most recently, he directed the Open Space Equity Campaign for the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYCEJA), which supports grassroots organizing efforts around environmental issues that impact low-income neighborhoods and communities of color across the City. NYCEJA campaigns have included closing down incinerator plants, addressing health issues such as asthma and lead poisoning, saving community gardens, creating new parks and planting more trees. Previously, Hugh spent nearly a decade in west and southern Africa assisting rural farmers and urban communities to reverse the racist legacy and destructive political ecology of colonialism and Apartheid. Hugh brings skills as an organizer, activist, manager, technical assistance provider, and fundraiser to North Star Fund and our efforts to support progressive social change in New York City. He is a graduate of Boston College and Clark University, a two-time Switzer Environmental Leadership fellow, speaks French and Wolof, and resides in New Jersey with his partner, Patrick Moffitt.
